Can I plant a blueberry bush where I live?

Blueberry Bushes questions and answers

I live in central illinois and my family loves blueberries. My mom agreed to let me plant some bushes (along with raspberries and a cherry tree) in our back yard but when we talked to a blueberry farm owner in Michigan they said they wouldn’t do well because of the soil. Would adding sand to the soil help (the farms plants were pretty much in it) or what would? We want at least 2-3 bushes.

Hi Kitsune, you have the right climate, and you can buy the correct compost for them. They like acid compost, this is labelled as ‘Ericaceous’ in the UK. We’ve got the wrong soil too here, it’s very alkaline, so we’ve grown them in pots in ericaceous compost, and they fruit really well. Best of luck it’s worth a go.

You should be able to grow blueberries in Illinois without too much trouble. If your soil isn’t acidic enough you can amend it by adding peat moss, pine straw, pine bark, etc. or by using Mir-Acid for feeding. When you select what varieties to plant remember to check compatability; some require a pollinator variety and not all can be used with all others. I have Brightwell, Climax and Woodard. Woodard will pollinate both Climax and Brightwell. I amended the soil with peat moss before planting and use pine straw for mulch around the bushes. I also add Mir-Acid around the bushes about twice a month just for good measure.

    Good luck and enjoy!

Highbush Blueberries should do well in your area. You can easily amend the soil to make it suitable for just a few bushes. Remember – get one other variety as a pollinator to improve yield.

See source for more information on growing blueberries.

Try planting Top Hat blueberries in a container. they work great and you can easily amend the soil in a container. The Top Hat is a low compact low bush blueberry variety. I have four of them planted in containers and they are producing juicy blueberries. Here are the characteristics of the Top Hat blueberry: http://www. naturehills. com/product/top_hat_blueberry. aspx

As you can see by the picture it is a top;producer.
