A little about blueberry bushes…. they are flowering species of the genus Vaccinium (which also encompasses cranberries and bilberries) and are known for their distinctive and rich deep blue colour, delicious flavour and are rich in vitamins and minerals. They are a popular and low maintenance plants to grow at home, and are and ideal species to grow in pots.
Apart from the fantastic flavour, which is not comparable to other fruits, blueberries have many uses and can be easily preserved for winter use, so it is always worth planting more blueberry bushes than you think you will need. For cooking, there are a multitude on blueberry recipes, with everything from the classic blueberry muffin to blueberry ‘cheese’.
Why grow blueberries? Well, for optimum health benefits, it is always worth planting blueberry bushes at home. Also, part from the flavour being second-to-none when fresh, the chemical composition quickly changes once the berries are picked (as happens with the majority of fresh produce). Despite the popularity in recent years of blueberries, they are still an expensive luxury item, with a large punnet of blueberries costing as much as the blueberry plant itself at certain times of the year!
